Last Sunday we held our first public open house to bring in potential buyers. This required strangers traipsing through our house freely opening cupboards and drawers. I am aware this is what it takes to sell a house (as you know I am eager to do) but at the same time this is still our private space and left me with a strange feeling. This called for a smudge.
After everyone left, we made our version of a smudge stick (Smudge sticks are bundled herbs used in traditional American Indian rituals to cleanse a person, place or object of negative energies, spirits or influences). Since we had not prepared ahead of time bundling herbs tightly together in string, we modified by using single dried lavender stalks from our garden. We lit the lavender, blew out the flame, and walked slowly around the house saying and thinking clearing and cleansing thoughts.
Did it give me a sense of balance and my house back? I am working on this -
I really need to believe it. I already know I will be repeating the ritual again
next Sunday after open house.

All the best, dear Janis! You'll find the right person for your house, I'm sure!In the meantime you'll smell lavender all over and that is good:)
that sounds like a kind of mexican "limpia". I'm sure that the lavander give to you tranquility after all those people seeing your home...
I don't like strangers opening drawers too!
good luck! the lavender will work.
oh I understand the feeling...
Sending positive and cleansing thoughts your way;)
Hi Janis, it's ok it's only people coming to look at a house they might want to buy. I know it's unpleasant but if you don't give any thought about it they'll take their energy back with them.
Just think positive, welcome those who are coming, as one of them will make possible for you to move on!
ciao, hugs.
a.
lavender will work...
take care dear

It must be difficult to share your space in such a way. I hope the lavender and good thoughts help.
I'm a big fan of smudging! :)
fingers crossed for you Janis....its no fun!

ohhh, hopefully it will all be over soon, and somebody will buy. we dry our own sage to smudge. i like the idea of using lavender. you can also drop a few drops of lavender and lemon essential oil onto a cloth and sweep it around all the doorways in your home. good luck with the sell, janis!
I'll keep my fingers crossed you won't have to clean(se) any more because someone made you an offer for your lovely home!
Leave it to you to have the most delicate smudge stick... home grown lavender...perfect. Good luck, wishing the right person to make the leap for your peaceful lovely looking home.
Hi Janis - I'm crossing fingers with Daan. (And personally it's the constant having to live in a "museum" while your house is on the market that drives me crazy.) That is the tradeoff with open houses - hopefully it will result in fewer further transgressions! Keep your eyes on the prize! Glad you liked the Fermob post and what a gorgeous little drawing of the curly iron french settee! I get it! (Paris is.....for Paris lovers!)
Why would they open your drawers?? Are you selling your house furnished? Our homes are our shells, in a way, and it would be totally unsetting having strangers nosing in my own things. But if the strangers are potential buyers, well, then, thank goodness for lavender:)!
To everyone - xoxo...
I love your way of 'purifying' with lavendar...
Thank you for the sweet link too,
Best wishes and good luck...today!?

ps beautiful photos, they capture the mood of your cleansing words,
and there's the noren!!I remember you told me about it (her) some time back. The combination of the white background of the woman and your smudge sticks is like a story from your line drawings, I feel the lavendar working already...:)))
Lavender sounds like a good way to go. Good luck with the sale!
wishing you a speedy and painless sale janis! sending you a big hug!
I'm hoping the second open house went well. I'm thinking of you. I love this smudging ritual and must incorporate it into my life.
Good luck. I hope things work out quickly for you.
I've never thought of this before...I imagine it must be a very disruptive energy...
I hope everything is cleansed and feeling safe for you right now.
{i have a smudge stick...do you think it'd work to cleanse an ex from my system? ;)}
Much love and good wishes to you Janis.
Andrea
Yes, I know how you feel... I remember when we sold our last home feeling very exposed every time we had a showing.
Praying for a quick sell!
I know that feeling... Good luck! Hope the next open house will go well.
