Yemaya
To get most places I need to go, I often drive down at least a portion of the "historic" El Camino Real. Not my favorite drive, or the most picturesque (I am holding back here). Though sometimes there are small pockets of independent shops and curious things that pique my interest and save it from being a mundane experience. Thus the botanica and the painting of Yemaya.* Though I've never been in this shop, I do love the painted window and the fact that it is unique among the ordinary. So I dedicate this drive-by photo to Yemaya, a show of appreciation for being creative, different, and staring down the big eye of Target across the street.

*Yemaya is a Yoruba ocean goddess, a mother goddess, the goddess of home, fertility, love and family. She is also a goddess of comfort and inspiration. She reminds us that even the worst catastrophes can be endured and that, with her help, we can learn to negotiate the ebbs and flows of change in our lives with her wisdom, courage, and grace.

... And Yemaya happens to be one of the most worshipped orishas in Cuba, and specifically Havana through its fellow Catholic deity, La Virgen de Regla.
