work of artist Laurie Frick

Artist studios.  Four-story clap board buildings constructed in 1907, thirteen foot ceilings, wooden floors (wooden everything), huge windows, lots of light, nestled on grassy hills and overlooking the Pacific ocean.  Once military barracks, now artist studios at the Headlands Center for the Arts.  A couple weekends ago we stopped by the open studios and wove our way in and out of artist spaces.   Lots of amazing talent and interesting work, but my favorite part of the day?  The craftsmanship of the old buildings.

I like taking the bus out there from SF. I haven't visited an Open Studios at the Headlands for a while. Must do. It's a nice area. A simple walk along the beach can bring a whole new perspective on life.

A perfect re-use of a cool old building! We have some near us that have so much potential, but are left neglected and falling apart, empty. Looks like an inspiring place to pass through. Thank you for sharing!

my boy's high school is in former military barracks, which sounds grim, but the building is actually beautiful, with a large central courtyard, big windows, and rooms converted to places where learning and teaching happens. and, on the subject of old barracks, my niece art high school in Florence were once royal stables, with a nice park all around. good uses of old buildings.

Lovely reuse of old buildings, love the different use of those places, just to take a grea use to them.

Denise - I know what you mean... The landscape is so dramatic, a great place to clear the head.

Juniper - the architecture in Malta would be amazing for artists studios!

Francesca - Great use of old buildings! And an art school in Florence? wow...perfect... I would love to see these converted buildings in Italy.
