Hortensia

.......
Behind the hortensia flower, or hydrangea (below), is Hortensia the girl.
The photo was taken on a day my grandmother and her sisters had a day off from work. It was the depression and so they would go from place to place working the canneries cutting fruit, vegetables, or fish. The sisters lived in Monterey, California where they also worked canning sardines on Cannery Row. One day a "handsome Italian fisherman" walked into the cannery carrying his catch. That fisherman became my grandfather.

An entire life in few (fishing) lines... You know in french we can do the same with "line"... right words for what'is written and for fishing... I like this story ! Sounds like happiness !

I enjoy love stories and how they grow... Beautiful photos to go along. Thanks for sharing. xoxo
Wonderful story Ms. Janis.
Great photos...thanks for sharing.
Maybe Ermengarde and Hortensia knew each other...
One of the old ways people used to make a living in my Italian corner of the world is salting sardines: as the fishermen would come back from sea, women and kids would start their gutting and salting job. And people found liveliness even in hardship!
I can see why the handsome fisherman fell in love with her....she´s beautiful! And how sweet is it to now how your grandparents fell in love...I don´t know anything about mine.

I love photos and stories like this. Melancholy and happiness both. Thank you for sharing this joy. What a beautiful name, Hortensina. I wonder, in english, is it common to use the name Hortensia or Hydrangea? For the flower, that is.
Malo - thank you for your sweet comment :) I am not sure how many people actually know the flower is also called hortensia. The common name used here is hydrangea - xo.
Lovely story! Beautiful pictures of your grandmother.
